With the IRS now accepting tax returns, you’re probably wondering when you can expect your tax refund. We’ve put together a helpful chart to help you estimate. Of course, bear in mind that sometimes unexpected delays can happen.
PEAK SEASON: Late March up to the April 15th Deadline
Keep in mind that during peak season, you are more likely to see delays on your tax return being processed and any refunds issued to you through direct deposit.
Tax Refund Expected Dates for 2024
The below chart is based on e-filing (which is the quickest and most efficient way to file taxes) and direct deposit (which is the fastest and safest way to get your refund), and with the assumption that there are no delays with the IRS.

How to Check Your Refund Status
If your taxes were e-filed, you can use the IRS’s Check Your Refund tool to check your status.
In order to run the check, you will need:
- Social Security Number (or ITIN)
- Tax year
- Filing status
- Refund amount.
Note: you won’t be able to check until about 48 hours after you have filed. Remember, it can take up to 21 days for an e-filed return to be processes (longer if it needs corrections, is an amended return, or requires extra review).
